If you travel about 18 miles southeast from Cuzco, you will come to a place named Paccari Tampu (`Dawn Tavern'). There is a hill here called Tampu-Tocco (Tavern Hole) with three openings in it. Around 800 years ago, so the legend goes, a man named Ayar Manco appeared from the central hole, together with his brothers and sisters. He was the first [G 11 / Inca], son of the sun and founder of the tribe that would dominate 350,000 square miles of western South America.
As a sign of his power, Ayar Manco carried a golden rod. Ayar Auca, Ayar Cachi and Ayar Uchu, were his brothers, and Mama Ocllo, Mama Huaco, Mama Cora and Mama Raua his sisters. Out of the side holes came 10 [G 05 / ayllus] or tribes and Ayar Manco led them all towards the Valley of Cuzco, stopping off in villages along the way to collect supporters. It was during this time that a son was born to Manco Capac and his sister Mama Ocllo, who became the second emperor, Sinchi Roca.
Manco Capac outlived his three brothers. Cachi was said to have been a violent man. It is believed that he climbed to the top of the hill of Huanacauri and flung stones down into the valley, making ravines in the places where they fell. He was sent back to the Dawn Tavern with another man to bring the sacred llama back to Manco Capac. Once the llama had been taken from the cave, Cachi was walled up in the hole. The [G 14 / Quechua] Indians, descendants of the Inca, believe that he is there to this day.
The other two brothers, Uchu and Auca were both turned to stone; Uchu at Huanacauri, and Auca became the stone guardian of the [G 20 / waca] of Cuzco.
Manco and his sisters eventually arrived in the Valley of Cuzco. Manco followed the instructions of his father, the sun, and plunged the golden rod into the earth. When the rod went straight into the earth, Manco knew that he had found the place for his tribe to settle. This was Cuzco, which means `navel of the earth' in Quechua. The other tribes inhabiting the region were driven out and killed.
